As your loved ones age, their vision deteriorates and their bones and muscle weaken, making them more susceptible to injuring themselves around the house. Data shows that this happens to approximately 2.3 million seniors every year.

We’re all in it together.  And we are proud to share some important safety tips that can reduce your exposure to these accidents:
  • Tape down carpets to avoid falls
  • Install handrails on both sides of the staircase
  • Install and test smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on all floors
  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Don’t stand on stools or chairs, which rarely provide sufficient support
  • Invest in a medical alert system, usually worn around the neck or wrist, that can call 911 if a fall occurs
Drug safety is essential for ensuring safety in the home.  Remember the following:
  • Review medication with your doctor to make sure it is up to date and organized in an easy to use dispenser
  • Create reminders on their phone or watch to make sure that your loved ones take their medication as scheduled
The kitchen is another important area for proper safety measures.  Please consider the following:
  • Store all heavier objects in lower areas to reduce the risk of significant injuries
  • Label the on/off buttons on all appliances
  • Maintain proper lighting
  • Ensure that anyone cooking wears fitted clothes
Finally, the bathroom is an important area to look out for.  You may want to invest in a few key items:
  • A non-slip mat in the shower
  • Metal safety handles in the shower and next to the toilet for support
  • Proper lighting in the hallways leading to the bathroom, especially for safe passage at night

These tips are easy to follow and can all be implemented in a single afternoon. By following them, seniors can significantly decrease their chances of injuring themselves in their own home. After all, every home should be a safe space.
